Your main goal when covering a flat roof is to create a leak-proof barrier. This is why single-ply membrane roofing for flat roofs is a popular option for many homeowners. Single-ply membranes are sheets of rubber and other synthetics that are attached to insulation to create a barrier of protection between the structure below and the atmosphere above.

There are two main types of single-ply membrane residential roofing: Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM). Both are outstanding roofing products that are similarly priced. View our flat roof gallery.

TPO ROOFING SYSTEMS

TPO is a single-ply membrane roofing system that has been in use since the early 1990s. Many people refer to TPO roofs as ‘white roofs,’ because TPO is typically white. However, TPO roofing systems are also available in other colors, including tan, gray, and a range of specialty colors. TPO roofing systems are durable and can withstand damaging ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure. A TPO roof is known as a cool roof because it reflects the sun’s ultraviolet rays. This means it can significantly lower your HVAC costs and make the inside temperature of your home a lot more comfortable during hot St. Louis summers.

Innovative Construction & Roofing delivers TPO to homes in rolls. After we install insulation layers and cover them with a cover board, we attach the TPO membrane to the insulation board. This is done with a bonding adhesive or a mechanical fastener. After the TPO is rolled out, our experienced craftsmen use a hot-air gun to melt down the membrane at the seams and fuse them together.

EPDM ROOFING SYSTEMS

EPDM roofing is a singly-ply membrane system made from high-performance synthetic rubber. This type of roofing system has been around for more than 50 years and has a proven track record. When choosing an EPDM membranes you have two color choices, either black or white. Black EPDM roofs retain heat which can be advantageous in the cold St. Louis winter months. EPDM tolerates exposure to UV light and extreme temperatures. It is flexible and expands to accommodate building movements. Its heat absorption helps snow and ice melt faster.

As with TPO roofs, our skilled roofers mechanically fasten or adhere the EPDM to the cover board. After they roll out the membrane on your flat roof, they secure the seams with a layer of seam tape or an additional adhesive, for a long-lasting durable roof.
