Shake and shingle siding products trace their history in America to the early colonial days. Over the centuries they have emerged as elements in various styles, such as the Craftsman. In the early years, shake pieces were hand or machine-hewed from cedar trees.
Over the last decade, vinyl products have come to the market that have attempted to capture the authenticity of real cedar.
Mastic Siding’s Cedar Discovery
Mastic offers several genuine, historic profiles. For the rough split look, choose the Hand Split Shakes. For a more uniform, smoother appearance, choose the Perfection 5″ or 7″ shingle. For an stylish accent, choose the Half-Round. Choose from the subtle shading and color variations of naturally-weathered cedar, or the fresh look of recently-painted shingles.
Regardless of your choice, you’ll never have to deal with the negative aspects of real wood products – rot. With Cedar Discovery, you can enjoy the true American look of wood, but without the lifetime of maintenance or repair needed with real wood products.

Mastic Siding An Element of Designed Exterior by Ply Gem
Mastic Home Exterior Siding, along with all brands in the Ply Gem family, have been incorporated into the Designed Exterior system. The Designed Exterior is a design process, crafted by architects, that brings together the timeless designs and styles with modern, low maintenance materials. In many cases, GREEN building concepts can also be applied to ensure maximum efficiency and energy savings.
The home exteriors were all constructed from Ply Gem building components and completed with support from ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and host Ty Pennington.
For one week 13,000 volunteers worked around the clock to build Seven Houses in Seven Days for Seven Families. These families would finally have houses to come home to after several months of trying to make due living with friends and family.
“The construction of these homes is one step in rebuilding the lives of families who have suffered incomprehensible loss, but who are also looking toward a new future,” said John Stephenson, vice president, marketing, Ply Gem.
“This build is one of the most inspirational Designed Exterior by Ply Gem projects to date. We are grateful to have helped the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team provide low maintenance, energy efficient, worry-free dream homes for deserving families, while inspiring others to visualize what’s possible in personalized exterior design.”
